Double-Mindedness and Apostasy: A Word of Knowledge from James 4:4 and James 1:8

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Introducing a Serious and HARD Word: In this post, I want to share a word of knowledge that the Lord God Almighty gave me this summer about double-mindedness and apostasy. These are serious issues that can creep into our lives if we’re not careful, and the Lord spoke to me through James 4:4 and James 1:8, revealing the dangerous effects of wavering between the world and His Kingdom. As believers, it’s crucial that we understand the implications of being double-minded and how it can lead to a spiritual downfall. Let’s dive into these scriptures and explore the significance of living a life fully devoted to Christ.

Significance of the Verse: James 4:4 presents a stark contrast between godly friendships and worldly relationships. This verse isn’t just about avoiding bad company; it’s about recognizing the deeper spiritual implications of aligning ourselves with the world’s values rather than God’s.

James 4:4 (NIV) states: “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

James 4:4 (KJV) states:“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

When James speaks of “friendship with the world,” he’s referring to a mindset and lifestyle that prioritize worldly desires, temptations, and influences over a relationship with God. As believers, we’re called to live differently. Our friendships should reflect our commitment to Christ, helping us grow in our faith rather than pulling us away from it.

The Dangers of Double-Mindedness: Sometimes, I feel that pure, godly friendships ended in the ‘80s, but I am older now, and you all are so young and new to this world. The people and systems of this world ride inside the bus with the evil one who rules it driving straight to HELL. Please, don’t fall for the lies that you can have one foot in your walk with Jesus and even a pinky toe in the world!!

James 1:8 (NIV) says: “Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

Double-mindedness has defeated MANY Jesus followers. Double-mindedness has ruined families, communities, cities, and ultimately—the world. When you allow your mind to be distracted by relationships that are not kingdom-building, you are working for the wrong side! The enemy will run with your weakness and wreak havoc for generations. You have choices every day! Choose Jesus always, no matter the circumstance, and no matter which friend believes whatever lies.

Apostasy Leads to Ruin: We need to understand the seriousness of apostasy, which is turning away from faith, especially after having known the truth. It is a dangerous path that can lead to destruction if we don’t remain vigilant.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 (NIV) reads: “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.”

As we move closer to the return of Jesus Christ, we must remain steadfast in our faith, resisting the temptation to compromise with the world. Apostasy will lead you and your future household to RUIN.

Final Contemplation of the HARD Word: Let us be diligent in making sure our hearts remain fully aligned with God’s purposes. In a world filled with distractions, the temptation to be double-minded is stronger than ever, but God calls us to be single-minded, focused on Him and His will. We must not allow the lies of the world to deceive us into thinking that we can have the best of both worlds. The world and God’s Kingdom are in direct opposition, and we must choose which side we are on.

Stay firm in your faith, trust in the sovereignty of God, and don’t let anything, or anyone, pull you away from Him. God’s love is unshakable, and His plans for you are far greater than anything the world can offer. Choose Jesus, and choose His Kingdom, for that is where true peace and joy are found.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for Your Word that guides us and reveals the dangers of double-mindedness. Help us to stay focused on You and Your Kingdom, keeping our hearts aligned with Your will. Protect us from the lies of the enemy that try to pull us into the ways of the world. We choose You, Jesus, and we choose Your Kingdom above all else. Strengthen us to live with conviction and purpose, knowing that we are secure in Your love and plan for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
