My Slice of Creation

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Last night, while driving home from Grayson’s play in Alamo, I saw Middle Georgia differently. Liam slept peacefully in the backseat as I made my way from Chauncey toward Eastman. The road stretched ahead of me, and suddenly, the gold in the sky caught my attention in a way I could not ignore.

I wanted to stop: to take a picture, to remember it exactly so I could paint it later, and maybe that pause matters. Because I was not headed somewhere exciting or unfamiliar.

I was simply returning home.

Yet in that ordinary stretch of road, the Lord allowed me to see something differently. I think sometimes we believe mission fields must be distant, and we imagine passports, planes, and foreign soil. While my daughter is currently serving Jesus in South Africa, living out Mark 16:15 in a literal sense, the Lord reminded me last night that not every mission field requires a passport.

Some require fresh eyes. Acts 17:26 tells us that God has determined “the boundaries of their dwelling place” (ESV); that means where we live matters. Where we work matters. The roads we travel matter. The people we encounter in our everyday lives matter.

This little stretch of Middle Georgia? This is part of my assignment, and this is my slice of creation.

As I drove home, I thought about how easily we overlook the places most familiar to us. The roads become routine. The towns become ordinary. The scenery becomes background noise.

Until suddenly, the Lord opens our eyes just like Hagar in the wilderness.

Genesis 21:19 says:

“Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.” (ESV)

The well had been there, but she just had not seen it yet. Ultimately, I wonder how often that is true for us.

How much beauty? How much purpose? How much ministry? How much holy assignment? Already surrounding us while we keep waiting for somewhere else?

Last night, the sunset over my road home reminded me: God has already placed me somewhere on purpose, and perhaps part of spiritual maturity is learning to see our familiar places through Kingdom eyes.

🌿 HOW ABOUT YOU?

What if the place you have grown accustomed to is actually holy ground? Have you overlooked your own mission field because it feels too familiar?

Spend time meditating on:

📖 Acts 17:26–27 — God determined your boundaries
📖 Genesis 21:19 — Opened eyes to provision
📖 Jeremiah 29:7 — Seek the welfare of your city
📖 Matthew 5:14–16 — Shine where you are placed

Challenge:

This week, ask the Lord to help you see one ordinary place differently.

Your workplace.

Your neighborhood.

Your school pickup line.

Your local coffee shop.

Your own road home.

Then ask: “Lord, what part of this slice of creation have You entrusted to me?”

Prayer

Lord,

Forgive me for overlooking the ordinary places You have already entrusted to me. Open my eyes to see beauty, purpose, and ministry where I have grown familiar. Teach me that mission is not always elsewhere. Sometimes it begins right where my tires already roll. Help me steward my slice of creation well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
