A Steadfast Heart: Overcoming Double-mindedness in Our Walk with God

Double-mindedness AGAIN

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Last night’s Women’s Night Bible study at The River Church (Eastman, GA), we took a deep dive into a topic that strikes close to the heart of many believers: double-mindedness. As we gathered together, we explored what it means to have a divided heart and how this spiritual struggle can hinder our faith journey.

What is Double-mindedness?

James 1:8 warns us about being “a double-minded person, unstable in all their ways.” Double-mindedness isn’t just about indecision; it’s about being torn between two allegiances. It’s when our loyalty is split between God and the world, or when doubt competes with trust in our relationship with Him.

We can see double-mindedness in our own lives when we profess faith but struggle to surrender fully. Perhaps we trust God in one area while clinging to control in another, or we let worldly distractions dilute our focus on His Word.

Double-mindedness is Rebellion

As we dug deeper, we recognized that double-mindedness is more than just a spiritual stumbling block—it is rebellion against God. Choosing to waver between trusting Him and pursuing our own desires reflects a refusal to submit wholly to His authority. It’s a heart posture that says, “I trust You in some areas, but I’ll take control of the rest.”

This rebellion separates us from the peace and joy found in complete surrender. Instead of walking confidently in His promises, we allow doubt and self-reliance to take the reins. It’s a serious matter that demands repentance and a reorientation of our hearts toward God.

The Dangers of a Divided Heart

We also discussed how double-mindedness creates instability—not just spiritually but emotionally and relationally. When we are torn between paths, it becomes challenging to move forward with purpose. We become like a ship tossed by the waves, lacking the steady anchor of unwavering faith.

The most sobering thought? Double-mindedness keeps us from fully receiving God’s blessings. As James 1:6-7 says, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”

How Do We Overcome It?

Together, we identified practical steps to overcome double-mindedness:

  1. Seek God’s Wisdom Daily
James 1:5 reminds us that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. When our hearts are divided, we can pray for clarity and direction, trusting that He will guide us.
  2. Commit to Wholehearted Surrender
Psalm 86:11 says, “Teach me Your way, O Lord, that I may walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.” A united heart comes from daily surrender, letting God’s truth uproot doubts and distractions.
  3. Renew Your Mind in His Word
Romans 12:2 encourages us to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. Meditating on Scripture helps replace worldly desires with a deeper hunger for God’s will.
  4. Build Accountability in Community
Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” We challenged each other to speak honestly about our struggles with double-mindedness and to pray for one another.
  5. Cling to God’s Promises
In moments of doubt, focusing on His faithfulness can restore our confidence. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 37:5, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.”

A Challenge for the Week

As we wrapped up our study, I gave the group a challenge to carry into the week: Seek God intentionally each day and ask Him to reveal areas in your life where you are wavering to trust Him. Keep a list of these areas and pray over them daily. It’s a simple but powerful exercise to help us recognize our divided hearts and surrender them fully to God.

A Personal Reflection

As I prepared this study, I found myself examining my own heart. How often do I find myself torn between trusting God fully and leaning on my own understanding? Reflecting on James’ challenge, I felt convicted but also encouraged. God isn’t asking for perfection—He’s inviting us into a deeper relationship where our hearts are wholly His.

As we closed our study, I left the group with this thought: Double-mindedness may feel like an overwhelming battle, but victory comes when we align our hearts with God’s will. Rebellion against Him is a weight we were never meant to carry. Thankfully, through His grace, we can lay it down and walk in freedom. He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in us (Philippians 1:6).
