Thank you, Father, for the Holy Spirit who lives inside of me! ☕💖
by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan
This morning was quiet—one of those rare still moments where life slows down just enough to notice the small details. After Chris and Liam left for their trip to buy a new tractor, I went about my morning routine—washing clothes, chatting with the dogs and cats, and finally, pouring myself a cup of coffee.
I opened the first cabinet to choose a mug. My hand rested on one of my paternal grandmother’s cups. It was familiar, filled with nostalgia, but something in me hesitated. I put it back.
Next, I reached for one of my daddy’s coffee mugs. A part of me thought, This is the one. But again, it didn’t feel quite right.
So, I walked across the room and opened the cabinet with my own mugs inside. I picked up a beautiful pink mug—one my daughters had given me. And in that moment, I knew. This was the one. It felt just right.
As I stood there with my chosen mug, the Holy Spirit whispered a reminder:
“You have done well by not settling for repeating your parents and grandparents’ relationships with Me. You have formed your own relationship with the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus.”
What a humbling, beautiful thought.
A Personal Relationship with the Father
Growing up, I witnessed the faith of my grandparents and my parents. Their prayers, their devotion, and their love for God shaped the foundation of my own faith. But at some point, I had to choose for myself. I had to open my own cabinet, so to speak, and pick a cup that represented my own walk with the Father.
God does not desire a secondhand relationship with us. He doesn’t want us to rely solely on the faith of those who came before us. Instead, He calls us into a deeply personal and intimate relationship with Him.
📖 Psalm 139:1-3 – “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.”
The Father knows us completely, yet He still invites us to spend time with Him—to know Him in return.
God Desires a Real Relationship With Us
From the very beginning, God’s plan has been one of personal connection. He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden (Genesis 3:8). He spoke directly to Moses as a friend (Exodus 33:11). And He sent Jesus—Emmanuel, God with us—to bridge the gap so that we could boldly approach Him (Hebrews 4:16).
Here’s what the Bible tells us about the Father’s desire for relationship with us:
💛 He calls us His children.
📖 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” – 1 John 3:1
💛 He desires closeness, not distance.
📖 “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” – James 4:8
💛 He speaks to us personally.
📖 “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
💛 He delights in revealing Himself to us.
📖 “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3
How Do We Draw Closer to the Father?
The beautiful thing about knowing God is that there’s always more to discover. His presence is limitless. His wisdom is infinite. His love is never-ending.
And all we have to do is spend time with Him.
🌿 Sit in His presence. Let your soul be still before Him. Worship Him not for what He does, but for who He is. (Psalm 46:10)
🌿 Soak in His Word. The Bible is not just words on a page; it is living and active. The more we read, the more we understand His heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
🌿 Talk to Him in prayer. The Father delights in our conversations with Him. He doesn’t require perfect words—He just wants our hearts. (Philippians 4:6-7)
🌿 Seek Him daily. Every single day, He reveals something new. We will never run out of things to learn about our Father, our Creator, our King.
Your Own Cup, Your Own Walk ☕💖
This morning, I chose a coffee mug. It was a simple decision, but it carried a profound message. Just as I chose that cup, I have chosen to walk closely with my Father, not just as a reflection of my family’s faith, but as my own pursuit of Him.
My relationship with God is personal. It is unique. It is growing.
And yours can be, too.
If you’ve been feeling distant, know this: The Father is always inviting you closer. He longs for a real relationship with you. Not just through the experiences of those around you, but through your own moments with Him.
So today, I encourage you—open your cabinet. Pick your cup. And spend time with the One who first loved you. 💖
