I love an opportunity to be “puny.”

The Story of the Widow’s Two Mites Scripture Focus: Mark 12:41-44
“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.'”
The Power of Giving Everything
This morning, the Lord reminded me of the story of the widow’s mite in Mark and Luke. I am not sure I really paid much attention to it outside of Sunday School since I was a young girl. I remember the story fondly because, as a girl growing up in church, it resonated deeply with me.
Because of this story, today I chose to buy a bracelet with two widow’s mite charms. Initially, I intended to purchase a cross bracelet, but something drew me toward the widow’s mite charm instead. After making the purchase, I sat for a moment, smiled, and went back to reread the story in the Word.
In the story, Jesus is teaching outside the temple, and He stops what He is teaching to comment on the enormity of the widow’s offering in comparison to the other offerings from rich people that had been made that day. She gave all she had without hesitation, and Jesus pointed out how special her giving was to the Kingdom mindset that He was trying to teach that day.
She gave two mites, the least valuable coins in currency at that time, yet her offering was MIGHTY because she gave ALL she had, instead of just a portion of what she had left to give.
When we give ALL we have out of obedience or out of love for God and for others, the Son of God stops, and HE notices! This woman, with such a small amount, made a HUGE sacrifice to the temple, which was a MIGHTY sacrifice toward Kingdom business.
What Is Kingdom Business?
What do I mean by Kingdom Business? Jesus has been teaching me that when I understand and do the will of of God that I am operating in and doing the work of Kingdom Business. When we make decisions inside the will of God, the Kingdom on Heaven not only notices, but the Kingdom can operate on earth through you!
On earth as it is in Heaven! Next time you get a nudge to give EVERYTHING you have because you love Jesus and because you have been asked by Him to give it, realize that you just helped God’s will to manifest on earth as it is in Heaven. Not to mention, the smallest gift of love given with the intention of total surrender of everything you have to God is the MIGHTIEST move you could make for the Kingdom of God.
Remember that when we make decisions inside the will of God, the Kingdom of Heaven operates operate on earth through us! Ultimately, this widow’s giving was not just a donation—it was an act of faith and obedience that aligned with Kingdom Business.
True Might Is Found in Trust
- Might in Sacrifice – The widow could have held onto her last coins, but she chose faith over fear. True strength is found in surrendering our lives fully to God, knowing that He will provide. (Philippians 4:19)
- Might in Obedience – Jesus did not praise her for the amount she gave, but for her willingness to give all. Obedience to God requires trust, even when it means letting go of what little we have.
- Might in Dependence on God – Her act of giving showed that her security was in God, not in money. When we release our grip on material things, we open our hands to receive God’s provision and blessings.
Where Is Your Might?
- Are you holding onto something that God is asking you to surrender?
- Do you equate strength with self-sufficiency, or do you see strength in total dependence on God?
- Are you trusting that God’s provision is enough, even when it doesn’t look like what the world expects?
A Challenge for the Week
This week, ask God to show you what you need to surrender—whether it’s control, fear, finances, or something else. Choose faith over fear, and trust that your small offering, given with a sincere heart, is powerful in God’s hands.
Prayer
Lord, give me the heart of the poor woman who gave the two mites. Give me a heart so pure and so generous that I never hesitate to give you ALL I have at any given moment every single day that I have left on this earth. In addition, Father, thank You for teaching us that true strength is not found in what we hold onto, but in what we give to You. Help me to trust You completely, to surrender my fears, and to give freely, knowing that You are my provider. Let my faith be like the widow’s—humble, obedient, and bold. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
