Preparing for Independence: A Lesson in Life and Faith

Am I maturing in my spiritual walk or not?

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Each month, our daughter Sophia comes to the shop to make her car and insurance payments, and I mark them as “paid” on a Google Sheet. Now that she’s almost twenty-one, she has successfully made on-time payments for six months in a row! 🎉

This month, our high school senior, Bailey, joined the system. As she made her first “Google Sheet” payment, she questioned why I wanted to keep up with payments on a chart. I explained that this tracking system is much like a bank’s payment book, and through it, her dad and I are preparing her for adulthood. We are teaching her how to manage responsibility, to build independence, and to become self-sufficient in her finances, chores, and daily life.

As I reflected on this conversation, the Lord reminded me—this is exactly what Jesus does for us.

Jesus Prepares Us for Maturity

Just as Chris and I are preparing our children to be independent adults, Jesus prepares us to be spiritually mature believers. We are not meant to remain babies in faith, surviving only on MILK, but to grow into those who can digest the meat of the Word (Hebrews 5:13-14).

🔹 Spending time in my secret place—reading my Bible, taking notes, praying, praising, and listening—is my preparation.
🔹 Jesus teaches me how to walk in faith daily, just as we teach our children how to navigate adulthood.
🔹 One day, I will stand before Him, giving an account for my words, my actions, and even my inaction.

But I am not afraid because He is equipping me for that moment with:
📖 His Word – My guide and foundation
🙏 His Communion – Our daily relationship
🗣 His Voice – Teaching and convicting
🔥 His Spirit – Strengthening and leading

Stepping Into the Next Season

This week, our oldest daughter, Kasey, has been packing and preparing to move into her tiny house. She is about to step fully into independence—this is her last weekend living at home with us. While my heart aches a little, I know she is ready.

Just as we have prepared our children to fly, Jesus is preparing me—molding my heart, spirit, and mind to be a true follower, abiding in Him (John 15:5). I don’t want to remain stagnant in my walk with Him—I want to grow, to learn, and to step into the purpose He has for me.

📖 Scriptures to Ponder

🔹 Hebrews 5:13-14“Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
🔹 John 15:5“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
🔹 Philippians 1:6“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
🔹 Colossians 1:10“So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.”
🔹 2 Timothy 3:16-17“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

📌 Application

1️⃣ Evaluate Your Spiritual Growth
➡️ Are you still relying on spiritual “milk,” or are you seeking deeper understanding in God’s Word?

2️⃣ Commit to Preparation
➡️ Just as we prepare for adulthood with practical skills, we must prepare spiritually by spending time with Jesus daily.

3️⃣ Trust in God’s Process
➡️ Growth can be uncomfortable, but just like children stepping into independence, we must trust God’s timing and training for our spiritual walk.

🙏 A Prayer for Growth and Maturity

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being my Teacher and my Guide. Just as I prepare my children for adulthood, You are preparing me for a deeper, more mature walk with You. Help me to seek Your Word daily, to grow in wisdom, and to step into the purpose You have for me. Lord, I surrender my fears, doubts, and impatience—teach me to trust in Your timing and to embrace the season I am in. May I bear fruit that honors You and live a life worthy of my calling. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
