The Courtroom of Heaven

A revisiting of Job 1 & 2

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Since July, I’ve been working through Alabaster’s Year in the Bible. Recently, I started fresh again with a group of women committed to holding one another accountable in the Word. Beginning again has been powerful—I’ve revisited my notes, dug deeper, and asked the Holy Spirit to highlight and to teach me what I missed the first time. He has been so faithful.

This morning, sitting at my kitchen island, I opened to Job 1 and 2. I first studied these chapters on July 4th—Independence Day. The irony is not lost because what the Lord showed me today is about the ultimate independence and freedom found in Christ.

The Holy Spirit whispered something important: “You missed the WHO is absent in the courtroom.”

What I Saw in Job’s Courtroom

From Job 1–2, I listed what I understood about the courtroom of Heaven:

  1. All the angels, including Satan, gather there.
  2. God questions Satan about his activities.
  3. Satan accuses Job after God highlights Job’s righteousness.
  4. Twice, God allows Satan authority against Job—first his possessions, followed by his health.
  5. God protects Job’s life even in trial.
  6. Job mourns, but he remains righteous.
  7. The court meets regularly.
  8. God is always sovereign.
  9. Humanity is discussed in Heaven’s courtroom.
  10. God permits Satan to move.

Then the Spirit reminded me—I missed the WHO!!

The Missing WHO

In that moment of the my lack of WHO–the Holy Spirit said, “You have not noticed the lack of the WHO in the courtroom at the time of Job’s accusations.” At the time of Job’s accusations, JESUS was missing inside the courtroom because He had not yet become our advocate.

Job did not have an advocate in the courtroom, nor did he have a defender or a way to take up arms in offense against the enemy! Hallelujah, GOD knew this fact and purchased “THE WAY” to freedom, to advocacy, to defense, to offense, to VICTORY! Our victory is the complete restoration through the resurrection of Jesus our Savior and our KING!

The Father and ALL His sovereignty made a way where there seemed to be no way due to man’s decision in the garden. The WAY of Jesus transformed more than just the earth and the heart of humanity –He transformed the very legal system of Heaven.

So how has the Court of Heaven function for the last two thousand years?

I guarantee by the blood of the Lamb that it is marvelous to BEHOLD.

At the time of Job’s accusations, Jesus was not present in the courtroom. Job had no advocate, no defender, no one to stand between him and the accuser.

Because of the cross, we do not stand alone in the courtroom. The blood of the Lamb guarantees this fact.

How Jesus Transformed Heaven’s Legal System

  • His blood covers us.
  • His sacrifice redeems us.
  • His resurrection prepares the way for our Advocate to enter the courtroom.
  • His authority breaks the power of the accuser.

The enemy may accuse, but Jesus speaks on our behalf (1 John 2:1). He constantly intercedes for us (Romans 8:34). He commands Heaven’s armies for our defense. He gives us armor and weapons on earth—the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit, and authority to overcome the enemy.

Additionally, who teaches us the Word even now? The Holy Spirit gives us revelation because He is our ever-present Helper.

Brothers and sisters, we are living in the greatest of times—because we have access to the fullness of the Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have secured our life, liberty, and restoration.

So let go of religion. Take hold of the fullness of God’s WORD and truth. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17).

Reflection

When you feel accused, misunderstood, or attacked, remember this: you are not Job. You are not without an Advocate. Jesus Christ stands in Heaven’s courtroom as your Defender, your Intercessor, and your Victor. Don’t live as though you are defenseless. Walk in the authority Jesus purchased for you. When the enemy whispers accusations, lift your head and declare: “My Advocate speaks for me.”

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for sending Jesus, my Advocate and Defender. Thank You that I do not stand alone in the courtroom of Heaven, but that the blood of Jesus speaks a better word over me. Teach me to walk in the authority You’ve given me and to silence the lies of the enemy with the truth of Your Word. Amen.

Scriptures

  • “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” —1 John 2:1
  • “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” —Romans 8:34
  • “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them.” —Hebrews 7:25
  • “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” —Revelation 12:11

Challenge for the Week

When accusations, doubts, or criticism come your way, pause and picture the courtroom of Heaven. Instead of rehearsing the enemy’s lies, declare out loud: “Jesus is my Advocate. He speaks for me.” Each time you feel under attack this week, respond with Scripture and stand firm in the truth that you are defended by Christ Himself.

Let’s take it a step further with this challenge, make God’s word a declaration over your life and over your circumstances.

Declarations for the Week

  • “I have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One—and He speaks for me!” (based on 1 John 2:1)
  • “Christ Jesus died, was raised, and now sits at the right hand of God interceding for me right now!” (based on Romans 8:34)
  • “Jesus saves me completely, because He always lives to intercede for me!” (based on Hebrews 7:25)
  • “I overcome the accuser by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of my testimony!” (based on Revelation 12:11)
