The Seal of the Spirit: Our Circumcision of Faith

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

During my Alabaster’s Bible in a Year (Week Two) study that I am revisiting with my online group, I found myself sitting in His presence once again after reciting Liam’s daily Bible verses with him. We pray before he leaves for school, and I begin to read for the day. This morning I had to revisit Romans chapters 3 and 4 because I struggled to focus on it closely yesterday.

However, today the Lord brought fresh emphasis to chapter 4, and He really opened my spiritual eyes to His truth in what the New Covenant really means. These passages reminded me that righteousness does not come by works, but by faith—and the Lord gave me revelation on how the Holy Spirit seals that faith as our covenant with God.

Scripture Foundation

“the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 3:22–24 (ESV)

“He [Abraham] received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well.”
Romans 4:11 (ESV)

“No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.”
Romans 4:20–21 (ESV)

“In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
Ephesians 1:13–14 (ESV)

The Biblical Revelation that the Jesus Taught Me

The Sealing of the Holy Spirit at the time of salvation is your circumcising of faith! God is a covenant God; therefore, once you are covered and bought by the blood of the Lamb, you are sealed unto the New Covenant through the sealing of the Holy Spirit. The presence of the Holy Spirit unto you is the seal of God. The sealing of the Holy Spirit spiritually becomes the circumcision of our faith in Jesus, completing the covenant with God the Father.

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord of All! God completed His promises and covenants for all who BELIEVE!!

Your works do not produce righteous, but your faith in Me [Jesus] with the evidence of the sealing of the Holy Spirit creates righteous through the grace of God through Me [Jesus] which produces covenant with us. However, if a man or woman does not truly receive Me the Christ in his or her heart, there is no covenant and no evidence of the sealing of the Holy Spirit.

Daughter, I warn you again that an intellectual knowledge of Me [Jesus] does not produce the covenant! For a heart change is where salvation forms and the seal is made. Doing what one ought is not FAITH! However, accepting what a man’s heart cannot LIVE without nor do without Jesus is FAITH.

Reflection

This is the good news of the gospel: righteousness does not come from works but from faith in Jesus Christ. Just as Abraham’s circumcision was a sign of his covenant with God, so too the sealing of the Holy Spirit is the sign of our covenant under the New Testament.

This revelation reminds us that salvation is not about head knowledge or outward effort, but about a transformed heart that receives Christ and is sealed by His Spirit. Without the Spirit, there is no true covenant; with the Spirit, we are marked as God’s possession and heirs to His promises.

Encouragement

Romans 4 calls us to live by faith, not striving for righteousness through works, but we must trust in the finished work of Jesus. The seal of the Holy Spirit is God’s unshakable sign of covenant with us.

May we rejoice today that our faith is credited as righteousness, and that by His Spirit we are forever marked as His.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Thank You for sealing me with the Holy Spirit, the true sign of Your covenant with me. I rejoice that I am not saved by works but by grace through faith. Lord, help me to walk daily in the power of this truth. Keep my heart soft, my faith strong, and my ears open to Your Spirit. May my life be a testimony of Your promise, sealed and secured by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge

Take time this week to reflect on your seal in Christ. Ask yourself: Am I relying on my works or on my faith in Jesus? Write down one area of your life where you’ve been tempted to “work” for righteousness and surrender it to God in prayer. Each day, thank Him that your faith—sealed by the Holy Spirit—is your covenant with Him, not your striving.
