Create in me a clean heart, Oh God!
by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan
Most every morning while I’m getting ready for work—washing dishes, folding clothes, or packing Liam’s football bag—I lose my cell phone.
Without fail, it disappears somewhere between the laundry room and the kitchen. I’ve found it in the dirty clothes basket, inside a cup beside my bathtub, and even sitting haphazardly next to the air fryer. I search and search, growing more frustrated by the minute, until I finally give in and say, “Alexa, call my phone!”
When she does, I always notice the caller ID—Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Dallas. It’s funny, but I always take note of where the “call” seems to be coming from that day.
But this past Tuesday, the Lord stopped me in my tracks.
As I waited for Alexa’s call, He whispered,
“How many times have you realized that you were lost?
How often am I calling you and calling you, yet you never hear My voice?”
I laughed a little at first. “Really, Lord? Do You want to teach me a spiritual lesson through Alexa calling my cell phone every morning?”
His answer was simple and clear:
“YES. You get distracted from one minute to the next. You take your eyes off Me. You fail to hear Me with your spiritual ears. The Holy Spirit has to teach and reteach you—over and over again.”
That truth hit me hard.
Readers, my distractions and my lack of listening to my Redeemer break my heart. I want nothing more than to have an intimate relationship with Jesus—all day, every day. Yet here I am, distracted and disconnected, just like I lose my phone after multitasking it into oblivion.

He reminds me gently,
“Come sit with Me, Jennifer.”
“Come listen to Me today.”
“Come visit with Me.”
Unfortunately, what am I doing instead?
So many insipid, mundane, unnecessary things.
Lord, help me hear You.
Help me tune my heart to the frequency of Heaven.
Grab my attention and steer my life as You see fit.
Scriptures for Reflection
John 10:27 (NIV)
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Psalm 51:10–12 (NIV)
“Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Challenge for Today
Take twenty quiet minutes—no phone, no music, no multitasking—and sit in His presence.
Ask the Lord to help you hear His voice again amid the noise.
When He calls, don’t wait for the “Alexa reminder.”
Answer the first time. I pray you learn from my mistakes.
I love you all…
Jennifer
