Better to Be a Beggar

Deep Thoughts and a Poem

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

There’s a certain kind of quiet that comes when you sit with the reality of your own soul. When the music stops being background noise and becomes a mirror—revealing hunger, longing, surrender.

That’s what happened as I listened to Die a Beggar by Josiah Queen. A lyric caught me:
“I guess I’d rather die a beggar than beg to be let in heaven’s gates.”
And suddenly I wasn’t just listening—I was praying.

Because I don’t want to live a life just trying to look put together. I want to be held together by Him. I don’t want to gamble my soul on tomorrow’s promises when today is full of mercy. I’d rather be lowly and known by the Father than exalted and never called His own.

Psalm 84:10 puts it this way:
“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”

There’s a humility in knowing who you are—dust, soul, story—and who you belong to. I may be made of blood and bone for now, but this life is only a whisper of what’s to come. And when the whisper fades, I don’t want to be a stranger at the gate.

I want to be a daughter—welcomed home. I began writing this poem early this morning, and it has slowly taken shape through out the day. I hope you feel my heart when you read it. I would love to read any comments you have.
