Breaking Strongholds: Overcoming Lies of the Mind

Strongholds must break in the name of Jesus!!

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

What Are Strongholds of the Mind?

This weekend, the Lord has been revealing to me the nature of strongholds and how they oppress His people. Strongholds of the mind are lies you’ve accepted and, unfortunately, come into agreement with over time. These lies are planted by the enemy and are often built around trauma or complicated grief, creating a fortress of deception that keeps you from walking fully in the freedom and purpose God has for you.

The enemy uses these lies to:

  • Break your God-given purposes.
  • Starve out your anointing.

God’s heart is clear: “Oppression is not how I intended my people to live!” He desires for His children to walk in freedom, fully aligned with His truth. But how do we overcome these strongholds?

How to Overcome Strongholds

  1. Declare and Decree Truth Over the Lies
    • Identify the lies you have believed and counter them with God’s truth. Speak the Word of God aloud over your life. For example:
      • If you believe, “I am worthless,” declare: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).
      • If you believe, “I will never overcome this,” declare: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
  2. Take Every Thought Captive
    • As 2 Corinthians 10:5 instructs, actively capture every thought and measure it against the truth of God’s Word. If it doesn’t align, reject it and replace it with His promises.
  3. Call on the Holy Spirit for Help
    • The battle against strongholds is not one you can fight alone. Invite the Holy Spirit to empower you and guide your mind toward renewal.
  4. Make This Process Habitual and Purposeful
    • Overcoming strongholds requires daily, intentional effort. Declare God’s truth habitually until His promises replace the lies in your heart and mind.

Why Strongholds Must Be Broken

Strongholds are not just mental obstacles—they are spiritual chains meant to oppress you and keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose. They:

  • Create cycles of fear, doubt, and insecurity.
  • Prevent you from fully embracing your identity in Christ.
  • Hold you back from experiencing spiritual growth and freedom.

The sad truth is that many people live their entire lives under the weight of these lies, and some even enter Heaven still believing them. But this is not God’s will for His children. Jesus came so that we may have life and have it to the full (John 10:10). Breaking free from strongholds allows us to experience the fullness of that promise.

A Bible Study and Application to Overcome Strongholds

Bible Study: Identifying and Breaking Strongholds

Study Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, Psalm 18:2, Proverbs 23:7, Luke 4:4, Romans 12:2, Jeremiah 23:29

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 – Reflect on how the weapons of our warfare are divine and not of this world. Journal ways you can take your thoughts captive.
  2. Study Romans 12:2“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Ask yourself: How can I align my mind with God’s will?
  3. Meditate on Ephesians 6:10-18 – Examine the full armor of God. Identify which areas of the armor you might be neglecting and how to put it on daily.
  4. Psalm 34:17-18 – Reflect on God’s nearness to the brokenhearted and how He saves those who are crushed in spirit. Consider how God’s presence can heal areas of pain and trauma.
  5. John 8:32“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Write down any lies you’ve believed and find scriptures to replace them with God’s truth.

Application Steps:

  1. Create a Stronghold Journal:
    • Write down every lie you recognize that has become a stronghold in your life.
    • Next to each lie, write a corresponding scripture that declares God’s truth.
  2. Daily Declarations:
    • Each morning, declare God’s truth over the lies you’ve believed. Example: “I declare that I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me” (Romans 8:37). Repeat these declarations until they replace the lies in your mind.
  3. Prayer Focus:
    • Dedicate time each day to pray over specific strongholds. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide you, to expose hidden lies, and to strengthen your faith.
  4. Accountability Partner:
    • Find someone you trust to walk with you through this process. Share your journey, pray together, and encourage one another to stay consistent.
  5. Implement Gratitude:
    • Write down three things you’re grateful for each day to shift your focus from negativity to God’s goodness.

A Challenge for You

This week, ask God to reveal the strongholds in your life. Pray for discernment to identify the lies you’ve believed and the areas where trauma or grief have created barriers. Write down those lies and find scriptures that counter them. Begin declaring His truth over your life daily.

A Prayer to Break Strongholds

Father,
Thank You for revealing the strongholds that have oppressed me. I surrender my mind to You and ask for renewal. Holy Spirit, help me to take every thought captive and align it with Your truth. Show me the lies I have believed and replace them with Your promises. I declare that no weapon formed against me will prosper, and I claim the freedom You have given me through Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
