Taking a Break with the Rascals

The Dirt Road Rascals
by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Sometimes, when your soul needs a little joy and your brain needs a breather, you just have to follow the fun. Today was one of those days. Instead of pushing through my never-ending to-do list and outlines, I took a creative detour and spent the day with the Dirt Road Rascals.

Let me tell you—it was exactly what I needed.

I dove headfirst into editing and refining the first seven chapters of The Dirt Road Rascals, my second and third grade reader that’s full of charm, curiosity, and just the right amount of chaos. The story has truly come to life in the Canva presentation, with all seven chapters laid out and images embedded to bring the scenes and characters to life. Seeing Lark, her grandpa, and even that sneaky rattlesnake pop off the page made my heart so full.

Yes, you read that right—a rattlesnake! Right in the middle of the plot, too. I won’t give too much away, but let’s just say the tension, adventure, and Southern grit are alive and well in this story.

There’s something so refreshing about stepping back from pressure and letting creativity lead the way. Today, the rascals led me down a dirt road filled with laughter, a little danger, and a whole lot of heart—and I’m so glad I followed.

Stay tuned. These rascals have more road to travel—and I can’t wait to share it all with you.
