🕊️ Courting God: Tiny House Bible Study
by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

This week, the Lord brought me back to thanksgiving—again. It’s funny how He keeps doing that, and I’m learning not to be surprised. Gratitude isn’t something we master once and for all—it’s a daily choice, a spiritual discipline, and honestly, a battle sometimes. And tonight, God showed me a deeper layer: comparison is one of the greatest enemies of thanksgiving.
When we compare ourselves to others, we’re inviting other “suitors” into our spiritual lives—entertaining voices that pull our affection away from God. We may not think of comparison as a spiritual issue, but it absolutely is. It robs our joy, dampens our worship, and places our eyes on what we don’t have rather than the One who’s given us everything.
đź“– What the Bible Says
Here are some verses that grounded us in truth during Bible Study:
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (ESV):
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 2 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV):
“…But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.” - Galatians 6:4–5 (ESV):
“But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.”

There are more, but even these few make one thing clear: comparison is a trap that leads us away from God’s best. When we’re looking sideways, we stop looking up.
🧠Reflection: Is Comparison a Real Struggle for You?
I had to ask myself this question honestly—and it hurt a little. I realized that comparison doesn’t always show up as jealousy. Sometimes it disguises itself as self-doubt, discontentment, or frustration. But the fruit is the same: I stop being thankful. When I’m not thankful, I’m no longer courting the heart of God—I’m distracted by what was never meant to be mine.
🌿 5 Reasons to Eliminate Comparison
- Gratitude grows stronger
You begin to truly see the gifts that are yours—and that God gave them to you on purpose. - Peace replaces pressure
The need to perform fades when you’re secure in your unique calling. - Your identity in Christ becomes clearer
You’re not a copy. You’re an original work of the Father. - You gain freedom to celebrate others
No more bitterness—just genuine joy for others’ wins. - You return to your First Love
When comparison dies, affection for God deepens. Gratitude brings us back to the feet of Jesus.
🙏 Prayer: A Heart Undivided
Father God,
Thank You for being the One who sees me, knows me, and calls me Your own. You’ve given me everything I need—yet how often I find myself looking sideways instead of looking up. Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve let comparison creep in and steal my joy. Today, I lay down the urge to measure my worth against others. I surrender the pressure to compete, to prove, or to perform. Teach me to live in the fullness of gratitude, to rejoice always, and to give thanks in all things. Help me see the beauty of my own portion—the gifts You’ve placed in my hands, the calling You’ve placed on my life, and the grace You pour out over me every single day. Strengthen my heart to delight in You alone. May I love You with a heart undivided, and may my life become a love story of worship, thanksgiving, and trust. Thank You for Your patience, Your kindness, and the peace that comes from keeping my eyes on You.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
📌 Challenge of the Week
Cut out Comparison. Cultivate Gratitude.
This week, catch yourself when you start to compare. Redirect. Refocus. Rejoice.
Write down 5 new things each day you’re thankful for—no repeats. Watch how that practice shifts your heart.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear how you’ve seen comparison affect your faith life. Let’s keep learning to court God with undivided hearts.

May the Lord bless my faithfulness because I did not want to have to do this over. 🙂 P.S. I am really Southern.
