Vision of the WORD in the Darkness

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

This morning, before the sun rose, I woke up in the pitch black of our bedroom. As I sat on the edge of my bed, I suddenly saw my large Spurgeon office Bible appear before me—not just in memory, but alive in an open vision. The Word of God rolled across the pages, the letters glowing from within, moving like living light.

Though my natural eyes were straining in the darkness to make out the faint outlines of furniture, my spiritual eyes were wide open. The vision lasted no more than a minute or two, but it has reverberated in me all day. I have had open visions before during the day—once in 2023 and twice in 2024—but never one like this, in the stillness of the early morning dark.

Even though I don’t yet fully grasp the meaning, I know God was speaking. He is not a God of chaos. He gives His Word as light, even when my understanding feels dim. I will pause. I will breathe. I will wait for Him to unfold the meaning in His time.

Four Things This Vision Teaches Me

  1. The Word is Alive and Active
Scripture is not ink on paper—it is living light. The vision reminded me that the Word of God burns with life when it is revealed by His Spirit (Hebrews 4:12).
  2. Spiritual Eyes See Beyond Darkness
My physical eyes strained in the dark, but my spiritual eyes saw perfectly. God teaches me that faith perceives what flesh cannot (2 Corinthians 5:7).
  3. God Speaks in His Timing
I did not ask for this vision. It came in His timing, unannounced. He reminds me that He is sovereign over how and when He reveals Himself (Habakkuk 2:3).
  4. The Call to Wait on Him
Even without full understanding, I am called to hold the vision, to treasure the moment, and to wait upon the Lord. His guidance always comes at the right time (Isaiah 40:31).

This experience leaves me humbled. I am hanging onto the wonder of God’s nearness and His ability to communicate with me, even when my comprehension is incomplete. He is faithful to finish what He begins.
