I love my Sophia and my Nannie
by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan
I’ve often said that Sophia and my Nannie are cut from the same cloth—and nowhere is that more evident than when I watch them together. My 21-year-old daughter, with her quiet, observant nature and her OCD-cleaning ways, has found a kindred spirit in my 93-year-old grandmother, Vonceil—our beloved Nannie.
Sophia doesn’t often pick up the phone to call me. She doesn’t always come around to see me as much as I wish. But with Nannie? Oh, with Nannie, it’s different. They talk about everything. They laugh, they clean together, and they find joy in the little things—things that I think many of us overlook. And tonight, at their tea party, they were wearing their fancy hats, sipping tea, and sharing stories that I’m sure I’ll never be privy to, yet I am so blessed that they have each other.
To tell you the truth, I don’t think I’ve seen Nannie this happy since my grandfather passed away in 1997. Seeing Sophia love her Nannie fills my mama heart to the brim. Knowing that my baby girl is taking care of my favorite person on earth is the kind of blessing that’s hard to put into words. Yet here I am, trying.
So, here’s to the bond between Sophia and Nannie. To the lessons passed down through generations. To the laughter, the tea parties, and the love that weaves us all together.
I’m just so thankful.
