One of the most exciting yet unexpectedly challenging parts of publishing a book is choosing the perfect cover. You’d think that after all the writing, editing, and collaborating with illustrators, the hardest decisions would be behind me. But here I am, staring at multiple beautiful cover options for Stella Star’s Chicken Farm, completely torn!
I’ve gone back and forth on font placement, title curves, spacing, colors, and even the size of the illustration—and every time I think I’ve settled on one, another idea pops up! 😅🎨
When I started this journey with Joshua Wichterich’s beautiful illustrations, I knew I wanted something whimsical, nostalgic, and full of heart—just like Stella herself. But now, looking at these different designs, I see how each option brings a slightly different feel to the book. Some are playful, some are classic, and some have a more storybook charm.
So how do I choose? 🤔
💭 Do I go with the curved title that feels like it’s wrapping around Stella in a warm hug?
💭 Do I opt for a more traditional layout that is easy to read and timeless?
💭 Do I keep the rustic charm of handwritten-style fonts, or go for a bold, fun look that stands out on the shelf?
A Peek Behind the Process 📚
Choosing a cover isn’t just about personal preference. It’s about:
✔️ Readability – Making sure the title stands out at a glance.
✔️ Emotional Impact – Does the cover capture the heart of the story?
✔️ Appeal to Young Readers – Will kids (and parents!) be drawn to it?
✔️ Branding & Series Potential – Does it fit with my future books?
