Living My Best Life After Teaching ✨

📚✍️A Mountain of Joyful Changes

by Jennifer Greene-Sullivan

Some days like today, I sit inside my tiny house office, typing away at the keyboard, lost in thought and in the words that flow onto the screen. This morning was one of those days, but before I settled into writing, my heart was filled with joy from reconnecting with former students.

I spent time with a sweet former student who is grown, beautiful, and flourishing—a reminder of the incredible young people I had the privilege to teach. I got to hear about another Wilcox student as she added her handcrafted jewelry pieces to Jubilee Junction—her creativity and passion shining so brightly! Later in the week, I will see yet another from Wilcox, and just yesterday, I FaceTimed two of my former Wheeler students as they paddle-boarded in our pond in Cochran. Even in college, my students still message me with questions—today, two of them asked me about Realism in literature.

These moments are the greatest gift. The Lord continues to give me glimpses of the impact I was blessed to have in the classroom, and I treasure each and every one. My students will always be my babies.

A Life That Has Shifted

Everything about my life now is different. Instead of teaching high school English, I’m fully immersed in writing, publishing, and ministry. Chris and I are always together—welding, farming, and working side by side while Liam runs, scoots, and screams in and out of our daily routine. The house feels emptier with our girls grown and living their own lives, taking the cats with them, leaving just Festus and Rudy, our ever-loyal dogs.

My church family has changed. My calling has shifted. And, most importantly, Jesus has changed me.

As I sit here writing this, I hear the clanging of metal and the grinder in the shop, blending into the rhythm of my thoughts. It’s a reminder that God’s plans are always greater than our own. I spent twenty years pouring into the education of my students, and now I pour my heart into words, stories, and devotionals that I pray will reach just as many hearts in a different way.

The One Thing That Remains

Lindsay told me earlier today, “You are living your best life.” And you know what? She’s right. I dreamed of being a writer since I was a little girl. I prayed for this life. And now, at 47 years old, I am walking in the calling God purposed for me.

But through all of the change, shifting, and growth, one thing remains: LOVE.

  • I loved teaching.
  • I love my students.
  • I love my children.
  • I love my husband.
  • I love to write.
  • I love to sing.
  • I love my little, rural life, even with all of its unexpected turns and new beginnings.

Most of all, I love the Lord who has orchestrated every detail of my story.

To be alive, to be favored by the Father, and to wake up each day with purpose and passionwhat an honor!
